1907年創立。当初は教師の育成・研修を目的とする公立大学として設立された。現在では教育学部から多くの教育者を輩出しているほか、医療関係の学部や芸術（音楽、美術）にも力を入れている大規模な大学。立地するグリーンビルシティは人口約6万人の大学街で、全人口の約半分は本学に関係する人々だという。学生の居住はキャンパス内でも外でも自由だが、一年次の約84％はキャンパス内の寮に住む。留学生は約65人で全体の0.4％。インターナショナルハウスは、留学生をサポートするとともに一般学生の留学の相談にも乗る組織で、必要なスタッフを揃え、親切に対応してくれる。授業料が比較的安い。
